Battleships demo/advert version 1
=================================
I know you know how to play battleships, but this program has some advanced
features (such as variable rates of fire and ammunition levels) so please
read on. It was originally written for my PD1 disc (along with 13 other
applications and lots more stuff) and it is included here as an "advert"
courtesy of David Pilling.
Getting Started
===============
Double-click on the Battleships icon to load the game. The program will
display an icon on the right hand side of the icon bar - click select on
this to display the board. Press menu over the board to display the
program's main menu, and select 'New Game'.
Positioning your Ships
======================
The computer will offer you each ship in order and tell you its length in
squares. Click select on the grid to position the ship length ways (left to
right) and adjust to position it vertically (downwards). After all the ships
have been placed, the game starts with your turn. A beep indicates that you
have tried to position a ship in an illegal place.
Playing the Game
================
You and the computer take it in turns to attack the other player's fleet by
choosing a square to bomb - do this by clicking select in the target square.
To help you remember which shots hit and which didn't, coloured markers will
be placed in the squares you have attacked. A green cross represents a miss
and a red tick a hit.
If the computer hits any of your ships a message will be displayed and the
appropriate box of the Ship Roster will turn red. Using the Ship Roster you
can visually see the condition of your fleet.
The game ends when one player runs out of ammunition (see below) or sinks
his opponent's entire armarda.
Ammunition Limits
=================
You have only 85 rounds of ammo. When these are gone, you can no longer fire
and can just sit helplessly and watch as your fleet is sunk. If you have
some ammo left, but not enough to use your current salvo setting (see below)
press Adjust to cancel the salvo and switch to a mode that requires less
ammunition.
Firepower Levels
================
Pressing menu over the board gives you access to a firepower menu, from
which you can set the rate of fire of your guns. On the Low setting, you get
one shot per turn and each shot uses up 1 round of ammunition. On the High
setting each shot uses up two rounds of ammunition but if you score a hit
you get another go. The Panic mode gives you 2 shots plus one per hit but
uses a whopping 3 units of ammo per shot.
The above values are quoted per turn so by using the High or Panic settings
you can get a whole salvo of continous fire without your opponent getting a
shot in edgewise. This is especially useful when you're in a bit of trouble
or down to your last ship.
Skill level
===========
You can also choose how well the computer plays by selecting either the
'Captain' or 'Admiral' options from the Skill Level sub-menu. 'Captain'
gives you an average game, and 'Admiral' a very hard battle. Stick to
'Captain' unless you like loosing.
Comments
========
As this is Public Domain you may copy the program provided that you do not
make a profit (moneywise - software swaps etc are allowed) from doing so.
Write to the address below including an SAE if you want a catalogue of the
other PD programs ew're currently sitting on. As ew've got about 5Mb (correct
14/03/1990) and this figure is steadily increasing there's bound to be
something you like. Also if you've got any PD send it in and we'll stick it
on a disc.
